Hey y'all, check this free advanced image optimizer or size reducer by Yahoo...

Basically, Yahoo is promoting their website optimizer tool YSlow [ http://bit.ly/1RjtBP ] for FireFox [ http://bit.ly/8tg9J ] (very cool) which now includes their image optimizer (Smush.it)...

You can also optimize images by supplying a list of links to images (max 5 at the date of this typing) online to Smush.it. [ http://bit.ly/DCZGs ]

If you are a web developer, be sure to checkout Yahoo's "Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site" too. [ http://bit.ly/4kdDCI ]

More Smush.it detail:

Smush.it uses optimization techniques specific to image format to remove unnecessary bytes from image files. It is a "lossless" tool, which means it optimizes the images without changing their look or visual quality. After Smush.it runs on a web page it reports how many bytes would be saved by optimizing the page's images and provides a downloadable zip file with the minimized image files.

I read their FAQ and found the following:

- A GIF file may be converted to a PNG if the PNG is smaller. (So if you use the image(s) on a site, you will just have to rename your reference(s), eish)
- They recommend keeping your private images private by not uploading them, haha.
- Their API is not yet available for the public.
- Smush.it can only "smush" files less than 1MB.
- Smush.it currently keeps all JPG metadata and exif (exchangeable image file format) information.
- You can't upload a folder to Smush.it yet.

Have fun smushing things!
